Purpose of Position :
In keeping with the Mission/Vision/Values of ComWell, a Youth Prevention Coordinator provides coordination and oversight of a youth substance abuse prevention coalition in Randolph and Washington Counties. This is done through adherence to the Seven Strategies for Community Change framework. This position assists in assessing the needs of the counties and in choosing evidenced based programs to address the chosen contributing factors.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  1.   6. Have a basic understanding of the impact trauma has on a person’s life. Be aware of the signs, symptoms and special needs a trauma survivor may have.
  7. Have an understanding and commitment to self-care practices to prevent or lessen the impact of secondary traumatization with staff and self.
  8. Participate in and recognize role in Performance and Quality Improvement (PQI) initiatives. Have a general awareness on the importance of quality improvement throughout the organization. Identify opportunities for improvement through data, observation of operations or consultation with staff, persons served or other stakeholders. Identification and input into opportunities for improvement is strongly encouraged.
  9. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with community partners: schools; law enforcement; liquor commissioners; youth; parents; health; business community; media; youth service organizations; religious organizations; civic or volunteer organizations; state, local or tribal government; and other community representatives. Assist coalition in developing partnerships with other organizations to carry out the mission and goals of the coalition as well as achieve requirements of any funding sources.
  10. Motivates and inspires others to support the coalition by: communicating clearly the results that are expected; appeals to hearts and minds; demonstrates care for coalition members; demonstrates confidence and lets people know how they are progressing toward goals.
  11. Inspires others to achieve results by: promoting the development of people’s talents; recognizes the contributions of others; stimulates others’ thinking; and builds their leadership skills.
  12. Work with school personnel in our local school districts to ensure sufficient Illinois Youth Survey participation.
  13. Understand prevention program best practices and models. Use models that are approved by the funding source. Train or identify and coordinate delivery of training resources meeting coalition needs regarding prevention program best practices and models approved by the funder.
  14. Work to maintain and support a prevention committee as a standing committee of the larger coalition.
  15. Responsible for engaging youth in coalition leadership, development, implementation and evaluation of coalition work and prevention strategies.
  16. Build community ownership of prevention programs by collaborating with key community leaders. Assist the coalition in building its capacity by facilitating the development of organization structures. Structures to be addressed are: coalition operating procedures; officers; decision making procedures; standing committees; community sector representation; cultural competence; staff and member roles; training needs and coalition sustainability.
  17. Plan and facilitate community coalition/project meetings and group processes. Facilitate the development of strategies and trainings empowering coalition members to take leadership roles for meetings and processes as possible. Facilitate the implementation of the chosen strategies.
  18. Collect, organize and interpret data.
  19. Conduct a needs assessment for community substance abuse prevention including identifying and using existing relevant data. Create and follow a detailed work/action plan based on the needs assessment.
  20. Use marketing and media as required through coalition activities.
  21. Work collaboratively with program evaluators to assess strategy efficacy and effectiveness. Communicate evaluation information to coalition members and the community.
  22. Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity. Communicate effectively with diverse populations with multi- or inter-disciplinary colleagues.
  23. Attend meetings and training activities. This includes consultation regarding progress, problem solving and planning for overall service delivery and program effectiveness. This also includes all structured trainings included in the program grant.
  24. Work on evenings and weekends as needed to conduct/attend community meetings and trainings and participate in events for community, youth and families.
  25. Collect information for and report on work internally and required by funder within established timeframes.
  26. Perform related or other duties as assigned by manager.
  27. Maintain compliance with all ComWell policies and procedures.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
  2. Driver’s license and proof of valid automobile insurance.
  3. Must meet expectations required by CANTS check, criminal record and Health Care Workers Background Check
  4. Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel and Outlook).
  5. Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service.
  6. Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
  7. Bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  2. Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
